Sea Island Resort Review: A Forbes Five-Star Georgia Escape for Couples, Golf Lovers, and Families
There are some places that impress you with their amenities, some that impress you with their service, and some that impress you with their setting. What struck me most about Sea Island Resort was its ability to excel at all three while somehow making it feel effortless.
Backyard view of the marsh from our cottage
Located along Georgia's coast, Sea Island has spent nearly a century perfecting the art of Southern hospitality and has earned its reputation as one of the country's premier luxury resorts. With Forbes Five-Star accommodations, championship golf, a world-class spa, exceptional dining, and an endless list of activities, Sea Island offers an ideal luxury getaway for every type of traveler.
For those of us in Chicago, another part of the appeal is just how easy it is to get there. After a direct flight into Jacksonville’s airport and just an hour-long drive north, I found myself beneath the canopies of Spanish moss. By lunchtime, you can trade traffic, skyscrapers, and packed schedules for ocean breezes, marsh views, and a slower pace of life.
What stood out just as much as the beautiful setting were the people. Every staff member we met spoke about Sea Island with genuine pride, and whether we were spending time with marine biologists on the beach, touring the golf facilities, or dining with the culinary team, it was clear this was a place they genuinely loved and were excited to share with guests. That passion showed up in the details, and it was those details that transformed a beautiful resort stay into something much more memorable.

Day One: History, Hospitality, and a Few Surprises
The 5-bedroom cottage that we stayed in for our visit
Our first evening immediately introduced us to the range of experiences Sea Island offers, starting with checking into one of the resort's cottages. It didn't take long to understand why they're such a favorite for families and groups, with plenty of space to spread out while still feeling connected.
One of my favorite arrival surprises was finding our own BMW waiting outside to use throughout our stay (a perk all guests receive if they sign up for a test drive). Even better, it was stocked with some of our favorite snacks alongside local favorites, a small detail that perfectly captured the thoughtfulness we would continue to experience throughout the trip.
Dinner took place in Sea Island's wine cellar with Lead Sommelier Ryan McLoughlin for a multi-course dinner inspired by the countries represented during the 2004 G8 Summit, which Sea Island hosted. Each course was thoughtfully paired with wines connected to the participating countries, creating an experience that felt educational, intimate, and uniquely tied to the resort's history.
Later that evening, we traded wine pairings for bowling, which was such a fun way to unwind after a travel day and a delicious meal. One moment you're enjoying a world-class culinary experience and the next you're laughing over a game of bowling with friends.
Day Two: Sporting Clays, Golf, and Georgia Traditions
The following morning began with a chef-prepared breakfast in our cottage, and they even brought us the viral donuts from down the road. This experience is available for cottage guests and is exactly the kind of meal that elevates a vacation. Instead of coordinating reservations or rushing to get ready, we enjoyed a slow morning over coffee while breakfast was prepared for us. For families or groups traveling together, I can't imagine a better way to start the day.
Our next stop was Sea Island's Shooting School for a sporting clay lesson with our instructor, Chuck. What I expected to be a fun morning activity somehow turned into something much more meaningful. Chuck's reminders to slow down, avoid anticipating, and trust the process felt just as relevant to life as they did to shooting. After the hour lesson, I discovered that I have a surprisingly decent shot, which was not a skill I expected to uncover during this trip.
Later, we toured Sea Island's Golf Performance Center, and even as a non-golfer, I was mesmerized. The technology and world-renowned golf instructors available to analyze, instruct, and improve every aspect of your game truly felt legendary. And legendary it is… many of the PGA TOUR champions actually train and play here! Whether someone wants to improve their putting, refine their swing mechanics, better understand their weight distribution, or anything else, there is an expert and a program designed to help them improve. I left so inspired that I immediately started taking golf lessons after returning home. Sea Island Golf Center, (and three championships courses) I'll be back.
The afternoon brought us to Broadfield, Sea Island's sporting club and outdoor retreat. We started the experience with a fan favorite, the Hawk Walk. We watched Irma soar overhead before returning gracefully to land on our gloved hand. It was an experience that felt equal parts humbling and inspiring.
Dinner that evening celebrated the flavors of Georgia with a family-style meal showcasing regional ingredients and Southern hospitality at its finest. The okra and fresh berry cobbler were standouts that I am still thinking about.
Day Three: Sea Turtles, Wellness, and the Beach
Our final morning began before sunrise for Sea Island's Sea Turtle Dawn Patrol.
Sea turtle nesting season had officially begun the day before, and because a false nest had been discovered the previous evening, there was a strong chance the mother turtle would return to nest again. As luck would have it, we were there to discover the second nest of the season! See the photo below of the turtle’s tracks leading up to her nest.
Our marine biologist guides, Jordan and Scout, were filled with such excitement and passion that it made the experience even more memorable. As we rode in the golf cart along the beach, they pointed out various marine life and explained the surrounding ecosystem. We even got lucky again and spotted a pod of dolphins swimming just offshore!
Standing on a quiet beach at sunrise while learning about conservation efforts and witnessing such a special moment in nature is something I’ll never forget. If you know anything about my family, you’d know how we love turtles and conservation, so this moment resonated even more.
After breakfast at Tavola in The Cloister (where Compelled to Travel guests can enjoy complimentary breakfast as one of their perks), we headed to the spa for a labyrinth sound bath experience. The calming energy of the spa and the mental reset of the labyrinth walk were exactly what we needed before returning to work and reality. We couldn't stay relaxed for long, though, because we still had one more adventure ahead of us.
That next adventure was horseback riding through the marsh and onto the beach. Riding alongside the Atlantic Ocean was one of those travel moments that feels almost like you’re in a movie and serves as a reminder of why experiences often stay with us far longer than souvenirs ever do.
Why Sea Island Resort Should Be on Your Radar
Sea Island Resort is one of those rare destinations that genuinely works for just about every type of traveler.
Families with young children will appreciate the endless activities and programming available throughout the resort.
Multigenerational groups will love the cottages and the ability to spend quality time together while still having space to do their own thing.
Couples and honeymooners will find romance around every corner, and with more than 40,000 honeymoons hosted throughout its history, Sea Island certainly knows a thing or two about celebrating life's milestones. I know I just shared how wonderful it is for families, but don't let that worry you because the adults-only pool is absolutely dreamy.
Friends traveling together will appreciate the variety of experiences available, from golf and fishing charters to spa treatments, beach days, and pickleball matches.
It didn't take long to realize that you could spend an entire month at Sea Island and still leave with experiences saved for your next visit. Tennis, sailing, horseback riding, falconry, beach activities, children's programming, exceptional dining, and more all exist within one destination, yet none of it feels overwhelming.
More than anything, though, Sea Island feels like the kind of place where traditions begin. The entire staff was so passionate about where they work and genuinely invested in connecting with guests, and that feeling stays with you long after you leave. It's the kind of destination families return to every summer, where children eventually bring their own children back to experience the same beaches and favorite restaurants.
Some vacations become memories, but places like Sea Island become part of your story. They become annual traditions, core memories, and the backdrop for milestones celebrated over decades.
